What is Red Wine?

The language of wine can be complex and overwhelming. Bitter almonds. Woody. Second nose. Cherry-like. Berry fruits. Tannins. Backbone. Learning about wine tasting notes is interesting and fun, but it’s also okay. Let’s start with what is that delicious red wine all about?

First up, the 8 major types of red wine are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Zinfandel, Syrah/Shiraz, Malbec, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, and perhaps the lesser-known, Nebbiolo, but, of course, there are many more types. Your job, should you choose to accept, is to find your favorite, but continue to taste others to add to your wine collection.

Its diverse style and structure make red wine a perfect pairing for the dinner table. Cabernet pairs is a tried and true pairing with steak, and lighter-bodied reds complement lighter dishes, such as roasted chicken and vegetables. Keep in mind “what grows together, goes together” when pairing wines with food; for example, Italian dishes with tomato sauce paired with Chianti.

How to Celebrate National Red Wine Day?

Every August 28 National Red Wine Day offers another reason to enjoy wine. #nationalredwineday #winelovers #redwine #redwinelover #wineloversvillage

No matter what day of the week National Red Wine Day falls on, there are so many ways to make wine a celebration, with friends, your partner, or even chilling on your own.

Eat, Drink and Be Merry

One of my favorite things to do is kick-back and hang out with friends and support local restaurants. During National Red Wine Day, some restaurants might even offer red wine specials! From an elegant dinner out or maybe a progressive tapas crawl, this is the perfect opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and taste new red wines. (But be sure to do so responsibly and don’t drink and drive!)
